History


1930 1934 Japan Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd., former company established to manufacture seaplanes for the Japanese Navy.
Ryouichi Kato, the late vice-admiral was the 1st President.
1935 Manufacturing license for French and light aircraft "Pou de Ciel" purchased, and the model manufactured under the name of "NH-1 Hibari (Skylark in Japanese)". (Total 25 till 1937)
1936 Supermarine "Southampton" flying boat that the Japanese Navy sold to Japan Air Transport Research Institute, the first private sector airline in Japan, modified into the commercial aircraft, which used to fly over the Kansai region as "Kirin (Asian unicorn in Japanese) Go".
Teikichi Hori, the late vice-admiral was the 2nd President.
Notes: Fleet Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was the best friend of President Hori and frequently visited the company. For that reason, Fleet Admiral Yamamoto presented NIPPI with the propeller on which he wrote his saying with Oriental calligraphy.
1937 12-shi (1937 Experimental) Basic Trainer Seaplane manufactured on an experimental basis as ordered by the Japanese Navy, and excellent flight test data acquired as the first developed aircraft in company, but it did not resulted in official order.
1938 13-shi (1938 Experimental) Amphibious Plane
started to be developed as the 2nd developed aircraft in company and also the 1st amphibious plane in Japan. Experimenter completed on February, 1942.
1940 1945 Rocket-engine-powered interceptor, "Shusui (Autumn Water in Japanese)" manufactured.
Plant facilities closed, following the termination of World War II. About 3,118 aircraft of 13 different models and various parts for about 1,200 aircraft produced since establishment. Type 93 Advanced Trainer was the model of the most produced aircraft, dubbed "Aka Tonbo (Red Dragonfly in Japanese)". (Total 1,918)
1949 Predecessor of present company, Nippi Motors Co., Ltd., established with capital of Japan Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd., former company.
Business restarted with automobile repair and reconstruction by present Aerospace Division.
1950 1953 Contract signed with U.S. Navy for aircraft repair.
Company named change to New Japan Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
1954 Aircraft repairment and modification contract signed with Japan Defense Agency. TBM-3 antisubmarine search aircraft for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and SNJ communication navigation trainer for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force delivered.
1955 Present Aircraft Maintenance Division established. North American FJ-2 Fighter delivered as the 1st aircraft.
1956 License for aircraft maintenance obtained under Aircraft Manufacturing Industry Law.
Corporate name changed to Japan Aircraft Mfg. Co., Ltd.
1957 Manufacture of parts began for Japan Defense Agency.
Magnetize, the first Japanese magnetic particle inspection device, developed.
X1G1 STOL experimenter to which modified SAAB 91B delivered to Technical Research and Development Institute of Japan Defense Agency. High lift device of PS-1 antisubmarine search aircraft and C-1 transport aircraft based on the result of the experimenter later.
1958 Mock-up completed of 1st post-war Japanese transport aircraft, Nihon Aeroplane Mfg. Co., Ltd. YS-11 in present Aerospace Division.
1960 1960 Manufacture and sale began of Fiber Reinforced Plastic boats.
1961 Aerospace Division licensed under Aircraft Manufacturing Industry Law.
Manufacture began of pylons and missile launchers for Mitsubishi/Lockheed F-104J fighter.
1962 Company's stock listed on 2nd section of Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Manufacture began of fuselage for Kawasaki/Vertol KV-107 helicopter.
1963 Tail section of Lambda rocket developed.
Manufacture began of fuselage for Mitsubishi/Sikorsky S-62 helicopter.
1966 First stage tails and tail cylinders developed for Mu rocket.
Manufacture began of center wing section for Shin Meiwa PS-1 antisubmarine search flying boat.
1968 Manufacture began of center and outer wing sections for Kawasaki P-2J antisubmarine search aircraft.
Technical tie-up contract signed with U.S. firm Del Mar Avionics for manufacture of aerial target systems.
5,000th aircraft maintenance completed in total.
1969 Manufacture began of flaps and ailerons for Kawasaki C-1 transport aircraft.
1970 1970 Manufacture began of pylons and missile launchers for Mitsubishi T-2 trainer.
License obtained from U.S. firm Hayes Corporation for manufacture of aerial towed target system (Hayes target system).
Business affiliation with Kawasaki Heavy Industries strengthened.
1971 Manufacture began of pylons and launchers for Mitsubishi/McDonnell Douglas F-4EJ fighter.
Repairment contract signed of YS-11 with the Japanese Maritime Safety Agency.
1973 Aircraft maintenance contract signed with Japan Air Lines.
1974 Contract signed with All Nippon Airways for maintenance of air conditioner parts.
Repairment contract signed of YS-11 with present Japan Air Systems.
Unmanned parking lot managing system, Parking Gate developed.
1975 1st Japanese motor glider, Albatross developed and flown successfully.
1976 License obtained from present Howden in the Netherlands for manufacture of Fiber Reinforced Plastic axial fans (industrial fans).
1977 Manufacture began of door equipments, pylons, and missile launchers for F-1 support fighter.
Present Aircraft Maintenance Division approved by Eurocopter Deutschland in Germany for maintenance service stations.
Present Aircraft Maintenance Division awarded Deming Prize.
1978 Pylons and launchers produced for Mitsubishi/McDonnell Douglas F-15J fighter.
World's 1st Fiber Reinforced Plastic catamaran completed.
1979 Manufacture began of engine nacelles and tail pipes for Kawasaki/Lockheed P-3C antisubmarine search aircraft.
Manufacture began of in-spar ribs for B767 passenger jet.
Infrared guided missile target systems developed and began for mass production.
1980 1980 Japan's only type certification as a glider received for NIPPI Pilatus B-4 glider.
Present Aircraft Maintenance Division approved by American firm Dassault Falcon Jet for maintenance service stations.
1981 Engine nacelles and rotor blades delivered for Asuka STOL experimental aircraft to the research and development with National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan.
1982 Aircraft Maintenance Division approved by Eurocopter France in France for maintenance service stations.
New floating target system, JAQ-1 developed.
1983 NIPPI B-4T two-seat glider developed and flown successfully.
1984 50th anniversary of company's founding celebrated.
